Are You Leading or Managing? A Back-to-School Reset for Parents

Aug 23, 2026

Back-to-school season can turn parents into managers very quickly.

There are wake-up times to enforce, lunches to pack, forms to sign, homework to remember, activities to coordinate, and a seemingly endless stream of things children need to do and places they need to be.

Without realizing it, much of our communication can become focused on keeping everyone on task.

“Did you pack your backpack?”

“Go get dressed.”

“Don't forget your water bottle.”

“Have you started your homework?”

Of course, children need our help with these things. But when parenting becomes mostly about managing tasks and behavior, we can lose sight of the role our children need us to occupy.

They need us to lead.

Managing and leading are different

Managing tends to focus on the immediate outcome. We need the child dressed, out the door, sitting down to homework, or ready for bed.

Leading requires us to hold the bigger picture.

As a Nurturing Alpha, you are providing direction while also paying attention to your child's developmental needs, emotional state, and attachment needs. You are creating the conditions that help your child follow your lead rather than spending the day trying to control every response.

This distinction becomes especially important with complex children. Sensitive, anxious, ADHD, neurodivergent, and strong-willed children often become more resistant when they experience a steady stream of commands, reminders, questions, and corrections.

More management doesn't always create more cooperation.

Take the lead before problems arise

One of the most useful shifts parents can make is becoming more proactive.

Think about where your family regularly gets stuck. If mornings are consistently difficult, what can you take care of ahead of time? If your child comes home depleted, can you protect some decompression time before homework? If bedtime becomes a negotiation every night, does the transition need more connection or a clearer routine?

Leading also means anticipating attachment needs.

Rather than waiting for your child to demand your attention when you're trying to get everyone out the door, you might take a few minutes to collect them first. A warm greeting, physical affection if your child welcomes it, a shared joke, or a few minutes together can make direction easier to receive.

This is one of the reasons collect before you direct is such an important part of the 3D Parent Approach.

You don't have to control every outcome

Back-to-school routines can bring out our desire for things to go exactly as planned. When something goes wrong, it can feel as though the whole system is falling apart.

There will be forgotten assignments. There will be slow mornings. There will be days when your child is exhausted and has far less capacity than usual.

A Nurturing Alpha can adjust without giving up their leadership.

You can hold an expectation while recognizing that your child needs more help today. You can change a routine that has stopped working. You can decide that an emotional need deserves your attention even when the schedule says you should already be moving on.

Your authority does not depend on controlling every detail.

Remember what you are working toward

We ultimately want our children to become increasingly capable of managing their own lives. That development happens gradually.

The routines you are supporting today are opportunities for your child to build skills around time, responsibility, transitions, emotional regulation, and independence. Complex children may need more support and a longer developmental runway in some of these areas.

As the school year begins, consider the intention behind the systems you put in place. Ask yourself how you want to show up when mornings get difficult, homework is forgotten, or your child is overwhelmed.

Schedules and routines are useful. Your relationship with your child is the foundation underneath them.

When you take your place as the Nurturing Alpha, you can provide the direction your child needs while keeping connection at the center of how you lead.
